Horton's Antique Clocks
63Y.
$1600
Black Forest clock, ca about
1875, with a carved figure on top
of the whisky barrel, drinking
brew from his glass and holding a
bottle. This model was also made
animated,
the man raising his
arm and taking a drink about
every five minutes. Unfortunately
ours is not animated or it would
have a hefty minimum. With the
man straddling the barrel the
clock and figure are 21" tall.
Carved on the front, below the
dial is, "Bernheim Bros. and Uri /
Sour Mash". Old hands and
numerals, round door over the
cuckoo bird opening. Carved on
the round door is, "B.B.& I".
Bernheim Bros. is not listed in the
clock trademark books, so I
would assume they are a whisky
maker. In many ways this is a typ-
ical cuckoo clock case, side latch-
ing doors, removable back cover
with gong attached, bellows, and
an old wood bird the style of which is found on cuckoo clocks around
1865-1880. The 8 day brass movement has pinned plates, which also
dates the clock 1865-1880. It is running, and all functions are performing
properly. $1750-$2500.

"Manufactured

Terry, October 5th, 1852",
copied from the complete
paper label of this 9 inch
Octagon Marine clock with a
torsion movement. Mahog-
any
case
is
9
inches,
cleaned/refinished years ago,
now in beautiful condition,
brass sash with good glass
held by the original white
putty. Painted metal dial has a
little paint loss, very accept-
able as is, no attempt made to repair the paint. Old hands, fast/slow
adjuster near the one winding arbor. I wound the clock and it ran just as
the previous collector said it would. A very rare S. B. Terry collectable
clock. $1600-$2000.

"Manufactured By / Terryville
Manufacturing Company, /
Terryville, Conn. U.S.A., /
Patented By / S. B. Terry,
October 5th, 1852", copied
from the paper label on the
back of this 9" octagon marine
cased clock with a balance
movement. The label is slight-
ly worn, perhaps 90% still
intact.
The
movement
is
signed, "Patented / October
5th, 1852". This 9 inch octa-
gon case is original black,
never cleaned, probably has a replaced glass, and an original aged metal
dial. Some small paint chips, old paint repairs, good hands, and the bal-
ance movement is running. Another rare and collectable S. B. Terry clock.

Baird
Clock
Mfg.
Co., Chicago, Illinois,
wood cased, tin dial,
advertising
for,
"Diamond
Black
/
Leather Oil". Baird
moved
from
Plattsburgh, NY to
Chicago in 1896, tak-
ing with him some
wood
cases
and
movements. He was
unable to manufac-
ture the paper mache
doors for his clocks
that he had been mak-
ing for over ten years,
so he changed the
case styles using only
the wood cases and
went to a painted tin
dial. This may be one
of the first of the new
style dials for later he
began to emboss the
tin dials. This clock is
all original and in
near perfect condi-
tion. The label is
slightly bubbled but mostly intact. The dial is signed, hands are correct,
all advertising paint is excellent, and the old brass bob may well be orig-
inal. As old clocks and movements go, Baird was not overgenerous and
did not go in for quality. He sold simple advertising pieces that happened
to have a clock movement in them. This particular label, similar cases,
descriptions, and company history, can be found in the book, "Baird
Advertising Clocks", by Jerry Maltz. If you want only one Baird clock for
your collection, or trying to acquire several different Baird advertising
clocks, you will not find a nicer, more original example. $2500-$3500.

Waterbury
Clock
Company
"Calendar No. 43", ca 1912. If I say
perfect you will expect too much so
I will say it is about as perfect as you
will find to be almost 100 years old.
Walnut case is 28" high, has the
original finish, all original wood
parts, and appears not to have been
cleaned yet is not smoky. Old signed
dials, aged of course, but still very
good, again, to be 100 years old.
Running movement is 8 day with
strike and it is running properly and
calendar functioning correctly. Glass
paint is original, very minor flaking
or thin when viewed from the back
side. In addition to being a calendar
clock, it is a striking model, and it
has an alarms movement between
the two dials. Three good labels on
the back, old pendulum bob, a wind-
ing key, and that is all you get. That
is much more than we normally see on any old clock. Some wood pieces
will shift or move if you grab them wrong but nothing is broken. Glue
and/or nails will loosen if you are not careful. This is an excellent exam-
ple of this model. Ly-Waterbury #238. $1250-$1500.
