William
E.
Hadlock, Boston,
Ma. spring dri-
ven wall regula-
tor, ca 1874. He
was a clockmak-
er, watchmaker,
and chronometer
maker,
1865-
1915. Hadlock is
first listed as a
watchmaker
in
the 1870 Boston
d i r e c t o r y ,
worked
for
Currier & Trott
until establishing
his own shop in
1874. Beginning
in 1878 his busi-
ness was listed as
William
E.
Hadlock & Co.
with
partners
William C. B.
Reed from 1878-
82;
Louis
a.
Karcher
from
1883-96;
and
Arthur C. Glover
from 1897-1915.
Hadlock
was
known
as
a
c h r o n o m e t e r
maker but he also
manufactured a
series
of
high
quality
spring
driven wall regu-
lators
in
mahogany
and
walnut
cases.
This very unusu-
al 39" high wal-
nut case has the
original top and
base,
wood
bezel, wood dial
ring,
and
has
beveled
case
sides.
The
removable
top
has metal pegs.
Some
things
about nice clocks really turn my crank, none more than original screws
that hold the dial. This dial is held with three tiny screws, over which the
wood dial ring is placed and it is held to the dial board with three tiny
screws. There is a very nice brass bob, a gold wood stick that attaches
above the movement, all looking and functioning much like the early
banjo movements. The case, glasses, door latches and other hardware all
appear to us to be original. The enclosed spring barrel appears to us to
hold an unusually large spring. We tested the running twice and it ran for
9 days. $3500-$4500.

Kramer
Backwards
Barber Shop clock,
reverse viewing from
barber's chair. A rare
clock that we have
only seen in books, i.e.
"Clock
And
Watch
Advertising", E108, by
Bernard Edwards; and
"Identification
and
Price Guide", Book 3,
by
Ehrhardt
&
Rabeneck, page 201.
The case, dial, inside
label, and 8 day time
only movement, are all
near perfect. In case
you need to be remind-
ed, the clock runs
backwards. The 22"
high oak case was
made by the Waterbury
Clock Company, their
"Drop
Octagon,
10
Inch", model, ca 1891.
The dial is signed,
"KRAMER / Service
Company / Elkader, Iowa." above the hand arbor, and "Unique Clock and
Reflective / Advertising / Patent applied for", below the hand arbor. Inside
the case is a complete Waterbury black and gold label, and the identical
pendulum as shown with the clocks pictured in the above referenced
books. On the case back is about 25% of a Waterbury paper label. $1500-
$2000.

Contemporary
8
bell
bracket clock, ca 1983.
Plaque on the front says,
"Handcrafted
By
/
Vincent
J.
Urschel
/
MCMLXXXIII". He did
first class work, finished
it
appropriately,
used
excellent
materials
throughout, and made a
clock anyone would be
proud to display. Walnut
case is 20" tall, broken
arch top, Queen Anne
feet, brass finial, brass
capitals and bases on the
quarter columns, three
large beveled glasses, two
large hinged doors with
latches,
and
carved
applied ornaments on the
swan's necks at the top.
Inside is a heavy duty 8
bell, 8 day, time and strik-
ing movement that is run-
ning and performing as
Mr. Urschel intended. Painted dial, moon phase, good hands and striking
regulator levers on each side. The solid plate brass movement is signed,
"Original Kieninger / Made In Germany". This is an exceptionally nice
clock. $1250-$1500.
